Police Deniy Using Force To Disperse Illegal Gathering At UPSI
TANJUNG MALIM, Jan 1 — Police today denied using force to disperse an illegal gathering by the Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) early this morning.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the allegations on several blogs that two students were injured after being assaulted by Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel was untrue and defamatory.
“During the gathering, there was no FRU personnel on duty but only policemen from the Tanjung Malim Police Contingent Headquarters,” he told a press conference here, Sunday.
He said the injuries to the two students were caused by their own stampede and not due to assaults as claimed.
He said the police at the outset tried to counsel the group and gave them 30 minutes to disperse but the students ignored the overture and became more aggressive instead.
“They then advanced and proceeded to lie down on the road which disturbed traffic. Police had to act to ensure public safety but it was conducted according to the book.
“They then ran to a nearby clinic and caused damage to the premises. Police detained 17 students,” he said.
Mohd Shukri added that the gathering was an illegal one as they did not have a permit to do so and, if fact, SMM, itself was an illegal association.
All the students, aged between 19 and 24, were investigated under Sections 186, 145 and 147 of the Penal Code and Section 27(5) of the Police Act. They were released on police bail this evening.
They gathered to demand that the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 be abolished and UPSI student Adam Adli should not be punished by the management of the university for pulling down a flag with a picture of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Umno Headquarters on Dec 17.

Government Aims To Create Competitive Environment For Businesses, Says Muhyiddin
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 — The government aims to create a more competitive environment for the private sector to thrive through greater liberalisation and deregulation, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said in order to make the private sector the new engine of growth, businesses need open, transparent and even-handed economic stewardship.
“As Malaysia strives towards becoming a high-income nation, the role of entrepreneurs in this journey grows in significance.
“Entrepreneurs and the private sector have an enormous impact on innovation, progress and the economy of the country,” he said in his speech at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of The Year Awards 2011 (EOY) here Tuesday.
His speech was read by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
Muhyiddin said the government has put in place several initiatives to ensure that Malaysia is on track, with the introduction and implementation of business-friendly policies.
In October this year, he said, the Prime Minister announced 17 services sub-sectors to be liberalised on top of the 27 announced last year, which shows that the economy is the most open it has ever been, with almost every one of these sub-sectors allowing for 100 per cent foreign equity.
“In addition, we recently enacted the Competition Act 2010 and appointed the Malaysia Competition Commission to promote competition and fair trade, while eradicating monopolistic practices and cartels.
“By doing so, we will strengthen the competitiveness of Malaysian companies and provide a more level playing field for foreign investors,” he added.
He said the government would continue to play its part in helping to create an attractive and conducive environment for people to invest in, work in and live in.
“Malaysia will also continue to strive to simplify as well as reduce the cost of doing business.
“In terms of human capital, the government will continue to put the right measures in place to ensure that industry has ready access to a large pool of qualified and skilled Malaysians,” he added.
He said the government would also pursue policies that create an environment where entrepreneurs do not just survive, but thrive.
“Malaysia recognises the critical function of entrepreneurs in developing and sustaining economic growth and wealth creation,” he added.

OK If Not Renominated, Says Hasan Ali
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 :
PAS Gombak assemblyman Datuk Dr Hasan Mohamed Ali said Monday that it did not matter to him if his party did not re-nominate him for the next General Election (GE).
Hasan, who is also the Selangor state executive councillor for Islamic affairs, said it was unimportant to him to be recognised for his efforts by the party or its president as his loyalty only lay with Allah.
“This (candidacy) is a small matter. Championing Islam, the Malay struggle and defending the institution of the Malay rulers is the bigger agenda.
“In championing Islam, seeking riches, posts and titles are secondary matters,” he told reporters at his home here.
He was commenting on a newsreport yesterday which said that he would be dropped as a candidate by his party for the next GE.
However, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has denied the report.
Hasan, who had been Selangor PAS comissioner for eight years, also said that he felt hurt reading the news report as it came two days before he was to to be conferred the Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) award by the Sultan of Selangor in conjunction with the Sultan’s 66th birthday celebration.
“With hundreds of people congratulating you on being conferred the award, how would you feel when suddenly a news report like this (being dropped as a candidate) comes out,” he said.
He also did not fault Selangor PAS information chief Shaari Sungib for revealing the matter about his (Hasan’s) candidacy to the media, saying Shaari might have had good intentions in doing so.
Apparently, the report had said that Hasan had not received the required nominations from the party branches concerned to be re-nominated.
On this, Hasan said the nominations were not the sole criteria to determine a person’s candidacy as the final decision lay with PAS’ central leadership following an evaluation process by the party’s Majlis Syura Ulama.
“As such, it is not appropriate for anyone to jump the gun and make announcements pertaining to candidacy for the next GE,” he said, adding that he hoped PAS’ top leadership would look into this matter (pre-mature announcements).
Asked further if he was still loyal to his party and the opposition coalition, Hasan said:”I am loyal to Allah. To mankind, in this context, I do not like to use the term loyal, but cooperate.”.
