UMNO Has Nothing To Do With Spat Among Opposition Leaders – Ahmad
PONTIAN, Dec 17 – Umno has nothing to do with the spat among some senior opposition leaders, said information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said disunity among opposition leaders proves that the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition is facing a crisis.
“Lim Boo Chang’s resignation from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the spat between Karpal Singh and Dr P. Ramasamy, and Datuk Dr Hassan Ali and Nasharuddin Mat Isa are bad signs for the opposition.
“It has nothing to do with Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN). If they quit PKR and join Gerakan, it is because of the things that we have done,” he said when presenting Risda replanting aid to rubber smallholders in Parit Haji Sapran, here Saturday.
He was commenting a statement by PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali yesterday that Hassan, a Selangor State Exco member and Nasharuddin, a former PAS secretary-general, were “dragged” into the Umno agenda to weaken the party.
He said that Boo Chang, Hassan and Nasharuddin have realised the many wrongs committed by the opposition parties.
“PAS can’t blame Umno for its own action of embracing the DAP philosophy by changing its objective from establishing an Islamic state to that of a welfare state.”
Ahmad also described the “Anything But Umno” (ABU) campaign by the opposition as an anachronism and ineffective against Umno.
Umno under Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has changed after implementing transformation by amending the party constitution to get closer to the people.
“ABU can also mean ‘Aku Bersama Umno’ (I Am With Umno) following the transformation done by the party,” he added.

OK If Not Renominated, Says Hasan Ali
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 :
PAS Gombak assemblyman Datuk Dr Hasan Mohamed Ali said Monday that it did not matter to him if his party did not re-nominate him for the next General Election (GE).
Hasan, who is also the Selangor state executive councillor for Islamic affairs, said it was unimportant to him to be recognised for his efforts by the party or its president as his loyalty only lay with Allah.
“This (candidacy) is a small matter. Championing Islam, the Malay struggle and defending the institution of the Malay rulers is the bigger agenda.
“In championing Islam, seeking riches, posts and titles are secondary matters,” he told reporters at his home here.
He was commenting on a newsreport yesterday which said that he would be dropped as a candidate by his party for the next GE.
However, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has denied the report.
Hasan, who had been Selangor PAS comissioner for eight years, also said that he felt hurt reading the news report as it came two days before he was to to be conferred the Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) award by the Sultan of Selangor in conjunction with the Sultan’s 66th birthday celebration.
“With hundreds of people congratulating you on being conferred the award, how would you feel when suddenly a news report like this (being dropped as a candidate) comes out,” he said.
He also did not fault Selangor PAS information chief Shaari Sungib for revealing the matter about his (Hasan’s) candidacy to the media, saying Shaari might have had good intentions in doing so.
Apparently, the report had said that Hasan had not received the required nominations from the party branches concerned to be re-nominated.
On this, Hasan said the nominations were not the sole criteria to determine a person’s candidacy as the final decision lay with PAS’ central leadership following an evaluation process by the party’s Majlis Syura Ulama.
“As such, it is not appropriate for anyone to jump the gun and make announcements pertaining to candidacy for the next GE,” he said, adding that he hoped PAS’ top leadership would look into this matter (pre-mature announcements).
Asked further if he was still loyal to his party and the opposition coalition, Hasan said:”I am loyal to Allah. To mankind, in this context, I do not like to use the term loyal, but cooperate.”.
